Wise Men and Gifts for Jesus - All Songs

The next set of songs refer to the wise men, to the gifts they brought to Jesus, and to the gifts that we could bring to Jesus.

Scripture
Matthew 2:1-11 (condensed written here. Read the whole account up through verse 18 for context to the song "Coventry Carol)
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. For thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

2020 Christmas Message from the Lynnwood Stake Presidency (accompanies "In the Bleak Mid-winter)

Brothers and sisters, we extend to you our warmest holiday greetings and pray your Christmas season is filled with hope and love.

We know that Christmas is not just about tinsel, ribbon and shopping, unless we have made it so in our lives. Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and focusing on the invaluable things in our lives. It is a time we look for ways to serve others. It is well to remember that he who gives money gives much; he who gives time gives more; but he who gives of himself gives all.

As you celebrate the birth of Christ, may He be reborn within you. The Savior dedicated His life to blessing other people. To Him, there were no strangers or foreigners but fellow brothers and sisters. May it be so with each of us this holiday season and in all seasons. As we take upon us the name of Christ, may we also take upon us His title of Prince of Peace. When Christ gave, His gifts were freedom to the oppressed, forgiveness to the repentant, hope to the despairing, and light in the darkness. He gave us His love and His life. We should strive to give as He gave. To give of oneself is a holy gift. This is the thought Christina Rossetti shared in the poem:

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would give Him a lamb.
If I were a wise man, I would do my part,
But what can I give Him? I will give Him my heart.

We invite you to follow the invitation of President Monson when he asked us to:

“This Christmas mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust. Write a letter. Give a soft answer. Encourage youth. Manifest your loyalty in word and deed. Keep a promise. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Apologize. Try to understand. Examine your demands on others. Think first of someone else. Be kind. Be gentle. Laugh a little more. Express your gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love and then speak it again.”

We testify that as we follow the Savior with full purpose of heart, His promise to always be with us will be realized in our lives this holiday season. May He become our focal point at this Christmas season and always. We testify that He lives today, the babe of Bethlehem—now the risen Lord. He and His Eternal Father love and care for each of us in a sacred and personal way.

We love you and wish for you a very Merry Christmas Season. Please let us know how we might serve you.

"The Kings" aka "Die Könige"

Lyrics:

Three kings have come from the eastern land. A star hath led them to Jordan's strand. And in Judea are asking the three where the newborn Savior on earth may be. With gold and myrrh and incense sweet they seek to worship the infant king.

How brightly shines now the light on high as to the manger the kings draw nigh. They look with rapture upon the boy. They bend before Him o'ercome with joy. With gold and myrrh and incense sweet they all adore the infant king.

O child of man. Go to Bethlehem. The kings are traveling. Travel with them. The star of mercy, compassion's star, shall point thee the pathway to Him afar. And fail thee gold and incense sweet. Give then thy heart to the infant king. Give Him thy heart.

"What Child is This?"

Lyrics:

What Child is this who laid to rest on Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?

Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding. Good Christian fear for sinners here. The silent word is pleading.

This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and Angels sing. Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh. Come peasant, king, to own him. The king of kings salvation brings. Let loving hearts enthrone him.

"Jesus of Nazareth"

English lyrics:

Though poor be the chamber come here, come and adore. Lo! the Lord of Heaven hath to all men given life forever more.

Shepherds who folded your flocks beside you. Tell what was told by angel voices near. To you this night is born He who will guide you through paths of peace to living waters clear.

Kings from a far land draw near and behold Him. Led by a beam who warning bade ye come. Your crowns cast down with robe royal enfold Him. Your King descends to earth from brighter home.

Wind to the cedars proclaim a joyful story. Wave of the sea the tidings bear afar. The night is gone! Behold in all its glory. All broad and bright rises the eternal morning star!

"In the bleak mid-winter frosty wind made moan; Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, in the bleak mid-winter long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold Him nor earth sustain. Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter a stable-place sufficed the Lord God Almighty- Jesus Christ.

What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a Shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man I would do my part, yet what I can I give Him? Give my heart."

"In the Bleak Mid-Winter"

Lyrics:

Lullay, thou little tiny child
Bye-bye, lully, lullay
Oh sisters two, how may we do
For to preserve on this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing
Bye-bye, lully, lullay
Herod the king in his raging
Charged he hath this day
His men or might in his own sight
All young children to slay
That woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and say
For thy parting, neither say nor sing
Bye-bye, lully, lullay
